German Beermaker Gilde Starts First US Brewery in Charlotte.

Charlotte, N.C. On Saturday, February, German beer producer Gilde will launch their first beer brewery in Germany located in Charlotte, N.C.. on 26th, 2022. Gilde Brewery has situated at 3530 Dewitt Lane in Charlotte’s flourishing Decrease South End neighborhood, thriving Lower South End community, a newly developed oasis for beer and brewing lovers.

“We are thrilled to be part of Charlotte’s vibrant beer scene and introduce our authentic German food and drink to the Queen City and across the U.S.,” says Mike Gaertner, the president of Gilde.

Gilde’s 9,500 square feet restaurant and brewery feature authentic German design, architectural elements, and millwork that are all set around the German-made brewery that features Caspary copper kettles and fermentation tanks made of stainless steel. The top-of-the-line equipment, paired with Gilde’s expertise in brewing, will ensure that they can provide Charlotte with clean, high-quality beer made following the strict quality standards set by the German Purity Law.

Alongside beer, Charlotte houses the Gilde’s U.S. headquarters, which manages the distribution of Gilde across the United States. Gilde has been working towards opening a Charlotte facility since 2018 but was delayed due to the pandemic and its resulting problems with the supply chain.

“Our opening is equally expected for the Gilde team as German beer enthusiasts across Charlotte and the U.S.,” says Karsten Uhlmann, the CEO of Gilde.

Gilde brought together a team from Germany and then relocated the team to Charlotte to oversee the beer and food operations. Willi Wallstab, a well-known German master of brewing, is serving as the Brewmaster at Gilde Brewery. The brewers will help the six most popular beers of Gilde-Pilsener Red Rooster, Radler, Urbock, Hefeweizen, and Black Beer and create new beers that are distinctive Gilde’s Charlotte brewery.

Dominik Kuehne, a rising culinary star in Germany who worked alongside the two Michelin top chefs Stefan Herrmann before relocating to Charlotte, is the executive chef. The menu of food options includes unfamiliar and familiar German food items. A few dishes on the menu include:

Obama & Brezel, a German cheese cream that is made from Gilde Hefeweizen beer, served with warm salted pretzels;

Weisswurst, poached with herbs Bavarian white sausage, served with hot, salted pretzels. Schnitzel, a breaded and fried cutlet of veal topped served with Lingonberry, Potato Salad, and lemon;

Mecklenburg Pork with Dark Beer Prune Sauce Brussels Sprouts seared, Mushrooms and Brown Butter Potatoes.

“We’ve created an immersive experience for our guests that gives the true picture of German culture food, cuisine, and obvious beers,” tells Gaertner. “We have been making beer since 1546, and we are looking for the opportunity to share our tradition and our authenticity to Charlotte within the U.S.”

After opening, Gilde will be open between 3:00 and at 11:00 p.m. Friday through Saturday and 3:00 to 10:15 p.m. on Sundays and Tuesday-Thursday. The brewpub can accommodate 350 people within the bier Haus and an outdoor Bier Garten with a patio and semi-private event space. Gilde has tapped local artisans Tenon & Tailored for custom millwork for the brewery, Carla Garrison-Mattos for murals and artworks throughout the building, and Kerf & Burled for outdoor tables, chairs, and the bar.

After opening, Gilde will sell cans of its most popular beers to customers who do not have access to the site. In addition, Gilde’s beer is present in various shops and at different markets in the Charlotte metropolitan region.
